“To infinity and beyond” is a funny statement. Since infinity has no beginning and no end, there is nothing beyond infinity. Infinity is immeasurable, unfathomable, always was and always will be. That is the being of God. That might be hard to understand but stick with me on this one, it’s worth investigating into infinity…
For 30 blogs, I am focusing on Getting to Know God. My launch guide for these 30 blogs is from The Navigators’ website. It is called 30 Days of Praying the Names and Attributes of God.
This is the third blog in the series and corresponds to Day 3 of the Navigators’ Guide which says:
“God is infinite. God is beyond measurement, we cannot define Him by size or amount. He has no beginning, no end, and no limits.”
As I mentioned above, we can’t possibly understand the true meaning of infinity, let alone the infinite nature of God. An online dictionary defines “infinite” as follows, note this is copied exactly from their site, with the exception of my Love comment on definition #2.
- immeasurably great: an infinite capacity for forgiveness.
- indefinitely or exceedingly great: infinite sums of money (or I say LOVE)
- unbounded or unlimited; boundless; endless: God’s infinite mercy.
- Infinite as a noun: the Infinite (Being) God.
All of these definitions point to God and I am thrilled that a non-biblical based dictionary uses GOD as the definition of infinite. I guess they too realize that He is the only way to truly describe Infinite. He is the Infinite being. As such, God has an immeasurable capacity for forgiveness, an exceedingly great capacity for love and He has unlimited mercy.
Can you grasp His “infiniteness”? Have you witnessed His unlimited capacity for love, forgiveness and mercy? I have and I am forever grateful for His immeasurable love for me.
There was a time in my life that I didn’t love myself, at all, period. However, since I am made in the image of God, I was still filled with love for others and tried to live out that love, even from my emptiness. Want to know what I found out? I found out that I do NOT have an infinite well from which to draw the love I so desperately wanted to pour out. In fact, because of my self-hate, I had an extremely limited amount of love to pour out. I ended up poring out more than I had to give, to my own destruction.
Coming to that end, where I could not love the way I wanted to love and could not function with my own self-hatred, was a wake up call. I realized that my only option was to accept God’s infinite love for me and try to see myself through His eyes. This is still a daily task for me and some days are easier than others. But, every time I catch myself thinking I am not good enough or strong enough or loving enough, I redirect myself to the fact that God is good enough, strong enough and loving enough FOR ME. I was not made to love on my own accord, I was made to love through the power of the Holy Spirit IN me. Once I remind myself of those facts, I can rest in God, knowing He has my back.
Another great factor of God’s Infinite nature is the Holy Spirit. As part of the Triune God, the Holy Spirit cannot be measured, He is everywhere all the time. He will indeed live through each of us (that allow Him to), meaning He can live through each one of the many BILLIONS of us that share this planet. That is completely mind boggling to me and likely is to you too. Well, I am just fine with that. I do not want a God I can fully explain and understand. I enjoy the mystery of God and can’t wait to ask all sorts of questions when I enter Heaven’s gates.
Do you agree with this name of God today? If you are struggling right now with understanding the infinite God, I suggest spending some time in nature. Once out in nature, away from electronics and devices and all distractions, you will find THAT PLACE where it is possible to commune deeply with God.
Creation is one of the best examples of His infinite nature. When you look at all He has created for us, the sunrise, sunset, the rain, the Sun, the Stars, the Moon, the entire universe, you cannot help but exclaim, Our God is AWESOMELY INFINITE! He was here before the world began and He will be here long after this world comes to its end. I encourage you to spend a quiet moment out in nature recognizing the fact of our infinite God.
The verse cited for today is Romans 11:33. Here it is from The Message Bible translation because it really spoke to me on this name of God:
Romans 11:33-36 The Message (MSG)
33-36 Have you ever come on anything quite like this extravagant generosity of God, this deep, deep wisdom? It’s way over our heads. We’ll never figure it out.
Is there anyone around who can explain God?
Anyone smart enough to tell Him what to do?
Anyone who has done Him such a huge favor
that God has to ask his advice?
Everything comes from Him;
Everything happens through Him;
Everything ends up in Him.
Always glory! Always praise!
Yes. Yes. Yes.
It is such a blessing to focus on God’s traits and let them soak deeply into our hearts, souls and minds. I hope and pray this journey will help you grow closer to God so you are better able to hear His voice and know His deep, infinite love for you.
Blessings and Love,
Pamela

I love it when people let God be BIG! Humankind, on the whole, try to put God into a manageable size. Yet, He is Infinite. Good luck trying to contain that – lol!
Good thoughts, Pamela! I’ll be “chewing” on this for a while.
So glad we walk together (and laugh! ) with our Infinite Lord♡
