Sovereign is not just a difficult word to spell, it is a difficult word to understand. Even more difficult is admitting that there is a God who is sovereign over all of creation, including each of our lives. In the simplest terms it means God is in Control. Now, if we recognize that fact or live our lives as if we fully believe that fact is another idea completely.

This blog is one in a journey of a Getting to Know God series. The names and attributes of God are adapted from a guide on the Navigators website called 30 Days of Praying the Names and Attributes of God. Today’s blog corresponds with the 18th Day, God is Sovereign.

Today our focus is on the sovereignty of God. The Navigators’ Guide says this: “God is sovereign. God presides over every event, great or small, and He is in control of our lives. To be sovereign. He must be all-knowing and all-powerful, and by His sovereignty He rules His entire creation.”

Our verses for today are:
1 Chronicles 29:11-13 (NLT)

Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things. Wealth and honor come from you alone, for you rule over everything. Power and might are in your hand, and at your discretion people are made great and given strength. O our God, we thank you and praise your glorious name!

Do you believe God is sovereign? Harder question, do you live your life as if you believe God is sovereign?

I thank God that He is in control of my life and that He presides over every event, great or small. It is not easy to walk in faith that God has control over our lives. When we experience difficult storms, we can’t see that God is in control or we can’t understand how a good God could let bad things happen to us. The key here is that we live in a fallen world. We live in a world where the enemy prowls about like a lion waiting to devour us. The enemy is looking to steal, kill and destroy. He will attempt, in every way he can, to steal your joy, kill your love for others and destroy your faith in God.

What we need to remember is that God is INDEED sovereign. He is over ALL things. He has all the power of the world and creation and the entire existence of the universe at His beck and call. So, when the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy we can count on the FACT that God is more powerful and can overcome the enemy’s plan for our destruction. God has the power to control our lives and can redirect anything in our lives for our good.

I like to say that “with God our lives are always on Plan A”. No matter the foolish choices and mistakes that we make, God is greater and God is in control of everything. Therefore, it stands to reason that God can take our “Plan B” choices and reroute them to His Plan A. It may be a more painful path to that Plan A, but it can still become, no matter how it looks to us, God’s Plan A.

I encourage you to look to the sovereign God and rely on His Awesome Power to control your steps and therefore your life. Let Him carry you through whatever storm you may be walking in and show you the good He will bring you to after the storm passes. If you can’t see His Plan A, spend time with Him to refocus your eyes and trust that He will show you the way. Spending time in His presence is a necessary and irreplaceable piece of your relationship with The God in Control of your life, seek Him now, while He may be found and relinquish control of your life to His Best for you. You’ve tried everything else, why not try the best option?

Blessings and love,
Pamela
