Do you feel powerless? Do you feel like you just can not take one more step? If you do, it is time to Power-Up. It is time to reflect and look at where you get your power. Do you rely solely on yourself for strength and power? Or perhaps you rely on a friend or family member to power you up? If so, stop, redirect and plug into the only source of power that has your best interest at heart, His name is Elohim.
This blog has been on a journey of a Getting to Know God series. The names and attributes of God are adapted from a guide on the Navigators website called 30 Days of Praying the Names and Attributes of God. Today’s blog corresponds with the final day of the guide, Day 30, God is Elohim.
Our guide from the Navigators says this today: “God is Elohim. This name means “Strength” or “Power.” He is transcendent, mighty and strong. Elohim is the great name of God, displaying His supreme power, sovereignty, and faithfulness in His covenant relationship with us.”
Our verses for today are:
Genesis 17: 7-8
I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.
Today’s verses are taken from the section of Genesis where God makes a covenant with Abram. He changes his name to Abraham and tells him about his many descendants to come. At this point, Abraham was nearly 100 years old and Sarah was ninety. Abraham thought it was a bit laughable that they should have a child in their OLD ages but he never doubted God’s words.
Part of this covenant was the directive to circumcise all the males in their household. Abraham followed this directive immediately with ALL of his household, including his servants. That is a powerful example of trust in God and obedience to Him. An even more powerful example of Abraham’s trust and obedience comes later when God directs him to take Issac, his only son, and sacrifice him. Abraham obeys this directive of God immediately as well.
Can you imagine a faith and trust in God so deep that you would immediately obey His directives without question? I can. I have a dear friend who I watch live out that very faith every day. She can walk in that faith, trust and obedience because she serves a Mighty God. Witnessing my friend walk out her faith in relentless obedience has bolstered me to begin to do the same. As I have taken steps in obedience my faith has been strengthened and I am quicker to respond the next time I hear a directive. The ONLY reason we can do this is because we serve a God that has Supreme Power, complete sovereignty and will be eternally faithful to us. We serve Elohim.
Our Elohim will not disappoint. He knows the plans He has for us and they are for our good and His Glory. It only takes a quick look outside your window to soak in nature and be a witness to the beauty, strength and wonderment of God’s creation. He created all of that beauty and wonder for us. He maintains all of that beauty and wonder on a moment to moment basis for us. He has the power to build and maintain the entire universe and everything in it so, how can we doubt His power to transform our lives?
On this, the last blog of our journey in the Getting To Know God Series, I encourage you to focus and meditate on the great power of God. Do you believe in His Awesome Power? Now a harder question, do you live your life as if you believe in God’s Awesome Power? If you are struggling in this area of belief, I encourage you to spend time with God in His creation and seek Him in prayer. Ask Him to open your eyes to SEE His mighty power at work. Then, buckle your seat belt because you will be amazed at how God reveals Himself and His work in your life.
