Every morning as I sit in my Devotionarium (a phrase coined by my husband), our cat lingers near me. All I desire is for him to come sit with me and snuggle in. However, he will often only come to stare up at me on my chair. Then, he walks away and cries as he walks back and forth down the hallway, returning once again to stare up at me. He cries out at my feet and even when I encourage him to jump up and sit with me, he will just stare at me.

The stare…

Sometimes he faces me, sometimes he puts his back to me. Sometimes as I attempt to lift him up he struggles away only to repeat all his crying and wandering activities. Sometimes he lays near me but just out of reach. He seems to be teasing me. Tempting me with his affections and torn on whether or not he will allow me to love on him. Of course, some days he allows me to pick him up or might even jump up to me under his own power. On those days, when he finally gives in, he just snuggles in with me and my books, purring to his heart’s content and peacefully falls asleep in my arms.

It struck me the other day that we often act the same way with God. All He desires is for us to come sit with Him and snuggle in. He desires our drawing near to Him so He can shower us with His love and affection. He desires our attention on Him so He can be our guide in life, so He can comfort us in our troubles and rejoice with us in our joys. He wants us to choose to be near to Him to receive the full blessings of our relationship. Don’t get me wrong, God will bless you whether you fully draw near to Him or not, but the Full Abundance of your relationship will not be released if you don’t make a choice to draw near to Him. He tells us very pointedly in His Word:

James 4:8a Come near to me and I will come near to you. (edits mine)

But somehow we cannot accept that as truth and the enemy has a heyday convincing us that it is not true. The enemy tells us that God demands holiness and that we are unworthy of approaching the God of all Creation. The enemy lies to us and tells us that our sin forever separates us from God and that God cannot be near us because of it. The enemy tells us that God sees us as filthy rags and is disgusted by us.

All too often we agree with the enemy. We look longingly at God, we cry out to Him. We stare up at Him and we wander away from Him crying to everyone but Him. We often

Near enough, but still at a safe distance.

come near enough to Him to see Him, but not close enough for Him to truly impact our lives. Sometimes, when He tries to lift us up, we cry out and run away…just like my cat.

That may sound ridiculous, but it is sadly true. If we do not KNOW the character of God and how He feels about us we can behave in this same manner, repeating the cycle over and over again. This leads to a life of defeat, not Victory. This leads to a life of bondage, not Freedom. Jesus came and gave His life for us so we could live in Freedom, Full Abundant Freedom. Jesus says it this way:

John 10:10 The robber comes only to steal and to kill and to destroy. I came so they might have life, a great full life. (NLT)

Are you letting the Robber – Steal, Kill and Destroy your Peace, Joy and Abundant life?? If you say Yes to that, I encourage you to lean into God to overcome. This “leaning in” can be as simple as spending time with God, one on one. Just sit and BE. No need to say perfectly worded prayers or work your mind to a frazzle always studying the latest and greatest Bible study so you can have more head knowledge about God. What each of us needs is Heart Knowledge of God. We need to KNOW who He is deep in our spirits and our hearts so we can overcome the robber’s plans for our distraction and destruction.

I encourage you to draw near and listen for the heartbeat of your Heavenly Father who loves you, no matter what. Lean in and learn His character and who HE says you are in Him. If you feel “blocked” from His heart, start the work of destroying the walls (strongholds) the enemy has set up in your life.

Inner healing is a necessary piece of being a full, complete and FREE child of God. If you don’t know where to start on that process, check out the book Biblical Foundations of Freedom by Art Mathias. This is an amazing book that explains how the enemy has legal access to us through lies we have believed and through unforgiveness as well as many other avenues. I have walked through this book with Holy Spirit and received the most amazing deep healing. If I can experience that healing after 45 years of walking in bondage and defeat, anyone can!

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you in a way you never thought possible. He will let you snuggle in next to Him and fill you with Peace so you can rest, just like my cat…

Blessings and Love to you!
